Denaby United’s Plucky Fight at Chesterfield.
Chesterfield 3 Denaby United 2
Chesterfield had most of the play and deserved their victory over Denaby United at Chesterfield, yesterday.
Time after time in the second half the home forwards got within shooting range, but quite a number of open goals were missed. McCormick opened Denaby’s score after three minutes, and, after Irvine had equalised with a penalty, Lovell put the visitors ahead, Buttrell again drawing level. It was not until the last few minutes that Abbott broke through and gave Chesterfield the lead.
The visitors’ backs, Shelton and Garner, withstood a very severe test, and Lee, in goal, made many clever saves.
Mitchell, the Coventry City goalkeeper, whom Chesterfield have acquired, did well without being brilliant.
The gate of 2,173 produced £106 gross.
