Denaby Have Still to Win a Home League Match

Denaby United 0 Gainsborough Trinity 1

Denaby United’s return to Tickhill Square in Midland League football after five weeks’ absence was not a particularly happy one.

Gainsboro’ Trinity were by no means strides ahead of them but they got the only goal and a couple of points when in the 75th minute Smethurst unsuccessfully challenged centre-forward SWABY and the ball, running loose, rolled gently into the back of the net.

United have still to win a Midland League match at Tickhill Square this season.

A draw might perhaps have been a fairer result. Denaby were always working hard and produced the greater number of chances, but by comparison with Gainsbro’ they had only one forward—Egan—who looked likely to score. Foster dropped one long, raking shot onto the Gainsbro’ crossbar; left half Roberts moved up to take a pot shot at Codd. But Egan went nearest, particularly with an oblique shot in the second half which almost produced a second chance for Redford. This near winner which the winger swept in was pushed out by full back Stainton. Much later In the game, with Codd on the ground after an unsuccessful challenge, Foster fairly wheeled in his tracks to push the ball into the Galturbro’ net, but United were out of luck. StaInton got in the way again!

This was how the game went. Gainsboro’ played the more constructive football, but hard, direct shots throughout the game could be counted on one hand.

The uninteresting pattern of the first half was repeated and the second half was notable mainly for a penalty conversion. Gainsboro’s Oxby was adjudged to have been unfairly tackled. Archer took the kick but Ted Smethurst parried the fast rising shot which came straight for him and caught the ball on the rebound. This was five minutes from ‘time. Bunclark missed an open goal still later so that on the whole Gainsboro’ pretty well underlined their slight superiority.
