Ignominious Defeat For Denaby In Cup

Denaby United 0, Heeley Amateurs 3

The heart has gone from Denaby United. This I can say with absolute confidence after witnessing yet another lethargic display at Tickhill Square, When Heeley trounced the home team 3-0 in the Sheffield Senior Cup.

One tried to see just a glimmer of the former spirit which was the fire of Yorkshire League Division I football, but there was just nothing there. For a truer picture one looked into the faces of the 11 dispirited players and found all the dejection, shame, misery and hopelessness of it all.

Only Wiggles in defence and yet again Whitaker up front showed anything above despondency that typifies Denaby’s play at the moment. Even Wiggles made excursions in attack to try to break the ice but to no avail.

Strong Defence

They had to contend with a well controlled defence in which Howard and Mawbey were towers of strength and another youngster,

White, was the pick of a forward line which relied on the quick breakaway and executed it very well too.

With three cup competitions holding nothing for them now Denaby can concentrate on league fixtures and hope they snap out of their ‘blues’ from now on. Perhaps the home ‘derby’ with Mex-borough could do just that.
