Game In Which Luck Was Not With Them
Denaby United 0 Notts County Reserves 3
After their heartening performance in coming back from Scunthorpe with a Midland league point last Thursday evenng (the game was goalless), Denaby United can be forgiven for feeling a little despondent about the outcome of Saturday’s home fixture with Notts County Reserves.
It was another of those matches in which luck was not with them, but doubly so in this case, for they were unlucky enough to lose centre- forward Austin Egan, midway in the first half—it was later learned that his right leg was broken—and then in the second half, with two earlier goals against them, Allott, who had been injured and off in the first-half, went off again after trying unsuccessfully to hobble about, and United were reduced to nine men.
Even so, they managed to keep the County defence busy, but it was often largely a two-forward attack with Woodger always worrying his way through and either Shephard or Lee aiding and abetting. It was not destined to produce goals, though there were one or two worthy attempts.
And to emphasise their earlier goals advantage, County scored again to make it 3-0.
Goal Disallowed
United’s misfortunes began early. They made the early running and there was promise of success, but to their chagrin the referee disallowed what seemed to be a perfectly good goal. Goalkeeper Twigg had the ball and was running across his goalmouth to clear it. Egan in close attendance, waiting for that half chance that sometimes presents itself blocked the ball with his foot as Twigg kicked it. It rebounded towards the net and Egan chased it and pushed it into the goalmouth. One assumes that Referee North thereupon adjudged that Egan had put up his foot before Twigg parted with the ball but from the stand it did not appear that way.
However so, it was no goal and in the 15th minute County centre-forward LANE hit one for County. Twenty-two minutes later JACKSON scored a beauty and LANE got his second .and the final goal of the game in the 60th minute. United had little chance in the second half: that they made such a fight of it was a great credit to them. All three Nottingham goals were good ones and this 3-0 verdict gave them a “double” over United. They won at Nottingham 2-1.
