Law Point-Saver
3 Minutes From Time

Denaby United 1, Boston United 1

Three minutes from the end of this Midland League match at Denaby Mervyn Law snapped up an equaliser to negate a lead Boston had held from the 31st minute. It was a good goal and a point indeed earned.

The experiment of playing Williams in the half-back line appeared to be having the desired results in the early stages of the first half, for United worked the ball effectively and were constantly in Boston territory. They did, in fact, everything but score.

Hackett, who must have delighted old Denaby friends by his anticipation, agility and sure handling of the ball (not least by those prodigious throws out to the wing!), did well to save a couple of volleys from Sarson and Williams.

Not that Boston were out of the game; Daley should have put them ahead much earlier than their 31st minute goal. Freeman headed only a foot wide and Kurz was always game for a shot when occasion presented itself. They gave, in fact, much more promise of scoring than United, but the goal when it came was quite unspectacular. Charles-Worth chasing a through ball and passing Jones to it. He had only to push the ball across the goalmouth into an untenanted net.

Law took a nasty knock in a quite accidental collision with Hackett in the first half. He was off for a spell, returning later and, as usual, was always in the thick of things in the second half. Williams dropped back to his old berth and in spite of much endeavour few supporters could have foreseen that late point-saver.

Unexpected—but indeed welcome!
