Denaby Defeat the Leaders.
Denaby United 1 Chesterfield 0
Chesterfield, the prospective champions of the Midland league, were well beaten at Denabv, one of the largest crowds of the present year showing great enthusiasm at the display given by the new holders of the Sheffield Challenge Cup.
In the first half there was only one team in it, the Denaby backs reducing the Chesterfield forwards to impotency, while the home attack was almost continuously extending the visitors’ defence. Well was it for Chesterfield that Riley and Strettle, a pair of powerful backs were in good form. But for them the score would have been even less flattering to the Second Division aspirants, who improved lot in the second half without being able to make an impression.
As a matter of fact. Hancock, the Denaby goalkeeper, only had one really difficult shop to negotiate right through the game, and in the matter of working openings the Denaby forwards were a long way ahead of their rivals. For once in a way. Glennon, the clever inside left, had left his shooting boots at home. Twice he dashed between the Chesterfield backs only to miss an open goal. But as a team Denaby played telling football and never allowed Chesterfield to develop form that was convincing.
