Big Blow to United Hopes

Denaby United 1 Doncaster United 4

Denaby United hopes of a place in Yorkshire League Division I football, were not improved by a dismal 4-1 defeat by a strong Doncaster United side on Saturday.

In one of the scrappiest, unhappiest games to be seen at the Square in many moons, United failed almost completely to answer the problems set by a highly organised Doncaster team.

Denaby were 3-0 down by half-time, after making a promising start, with inside left Peter Caunt almost giving them the lead with a second minute shot that went just wide.

It was fitting then that Caunt – the only consistent Denaby forward – should score Denaby’s “consolation goal”from the penalty spot after 70 minutes. But this was only after Doncaster centre forward Bullers had hit his side’s fourth goal five minutes after the restart.

Keeper Unsighted

it was in the 10th minute that Doncaster took a shock lead as left back Derek Cox missed a Clark centre on the line, leaving Collingwood unsighted for the ball to slide into the net.

The home defence fell to pieces to give Sinclair a good run for a 20 yards goal after 23 minutes. And seven minutes later Bullers got the third was an unstoppable shot that had the unfortunate Collingwood going the wrong way. He turned, but was too late.

Charlie Williams should have claimed the ball from the right that give Bullers his second, his sides fourth.

That was that, apart from Caunt’s effort. The United attack lacked planning, despite good service from defence, the forwards never looked capable of troubling Doncaster and consistently lost possession.
