Penalty Point

Denaby 1, Grimsby 1

The visit of the Midland League champions to Tickhill Square on Saturday produced a good game which resulted in a 1-1 draw. This was about the fairest result, for, though Grimsby had the ball in the net three times and were allowed only one goal, they did not monopolise play by any means and in the midfield exchanges Denaby readily held their own.

The Grimsby team included a strong local element. There was Hinchliffe, the inside-right secured from Denaby earlier in the season, Annables, the former Mexboro’ back, Waring, who was secured from Wombwell and Moralee, son of the former Mexboro’ trainer. All these young players acquitted themselves creditably and Hinchliffe soon drew attention to himself by threading his way through the Denaby defence and giving Ponting a great chance which he was too slow to take.

In spite of playing uphill and against the wind Denaby retaliated briskly and the Grimsby goal survived the narrowest escape of the first half when a fine centre by Harry Haggar was headed down in front of the untenanted goal and Mugglestone screwed the ball against the post.

Denaby went ahead through a penalty goal just before the interval. Annables bundled Siddall over as the winger was cutting in and the referee took what seemed an unnecessarily harsh view of the offence. Siddall converted the penalty.

Ponting got the ball in the net immediately after but had handled and Denaby crossed over with a lead which they held until near the end when Ponting beat Astle, who had played a very good game, from close range. Holmes had previously got a goal for Grimsby which the referee allowed, only to change his mind after consulting one of the linesmen.

Denaby were best served at back where Skelton played finely, with Taylor a consistent colleague. Fitzgerald was the best of the halves and Armand the best forward with a dangerous partner in Siddall. King was out of his element at inside-left.

Hinchliffe, Grimsby’s massive centre-half, did great work without taking unfair advantage of his size and Moralee shone in the forward line.
