Denaby United 1 Grimsby Reserves 4
Until the last few minutes of the game Denaby there was only one goal separating the two teams, and the play both even and full of interest. Denaby played far better than their lowly position would suggest. and they had several chances to get on terms, notably when a penalty was awarded, but Green’s kick was finely saved by Theaker. Grimsby had two early goals through Bestall and Quigley, but Betts soon reduced the arrears, and from that time the Denaby men were quite as frequently in the picture as the visitors.
The Grimsby work, with Bestall as schemer-in-chief, was more clever, but good defensive play and abundance enthusiasm carried Denaby into the Grimsby goalmouth time after time, and Theaker had some busy momenta. Denab’s weakness was on the right wing, where too many attacks petered out against Robinson, but on the other flanks. Fleetwood and Betts kept up livelv raids.
There were hopes of a fighting finish, but the tendency of Ellison, left half, to leave the dangerous Bestall-Quigley wing uncovered, was the turning point. The two late goal* emanated from that source, one being headed Lewis, and the other neatly lobbed over the advancing goalkeeper by Bestall.
