Third Defeat in Succession for Denaby

Denaby United seem to have struck the “doldrums.” After consecutive defeats by Frickley Colliery and Worksop Town, Ilkeston Town completed the “hat-trick” when they beat Denaby 2-1 at Tickhill Square on Saturday.

Hit by a recent injury epidemic, Denaby were under-strength, playing second team men Metcalfe in goal, Collinson at left-back and Watkins at inside-right.

A heavy shower shortly before the kick-off made conditions sticky, and the visitors, who seemed to be more at home on the slippery surface, were soon on top.

After 17 minutes the Ilkeston centre-forward Burton had a chance to put the visitors in front, but shot straight into Metcalfe’s hands from six yards, but three minutes later he made amends when he headed home a cross from outside-right Blount.

The visitors went further ahead in the 34th minute when Burton broke clear of the Denaby defence, and cleverly lifted the ball over the head of the advancing Metcalfe.

Stung into action, Denaby fought back and within minutes centre-forward Dodds cut the arrears with a neat goal from a left-wing cross.

During the closing stages of the second half, Denaby took control, but though they bombarded the Ilkeston goal, the equaliser did not come.
