Denaby Lucky To Win

But Unlucky in the Weather

Denaby United 1  Notts County Res  0

Wednesday was an evening of ill-fortune at Tickhill Square. Notts. County Reserves were extremely unlucky to lose the last Midland League match of the season, rearranged from December 16th and played at Denaby as a sporting gesture to the club, and United equally unlucky in the weather. On a miserably cold evening there was a “gate” of only £20 to contrast with a “possible” in the region of £80.

An opportunistic goal by centre-forward PLATTS won the game for Denaby. Harassed by Baxter, he managed to pull the ball round the Nottingham centre-half and beat Bradley by a couple of yards. That was in the 18th minute.

Only three minutes earlier King had unaccountably shot wide after outpacing the Denaby defence, and towards the close of the half both McPherson and Wylie were out of luck with good shots. Wylie had a repeat of his ill-fortune in the second half, hitting the post and putting the ball over the bar at his second attempt. County found their men excellently and were constantly in the Denaby half after half-time, but they were right out of luck.

Denaby forwards fell out of the picture but Mayhall, in goal emerged as one of the man of the match with a first-class display. He has re-signed for United as have Williams and Lockwood, Hibbert, McGuinness, Law and Rowney.

Arrangements are going ahead for the annual meeting which will probably be held later this month.
