Peterborough United were the Better Side.

Denaby United 1 Peterborough United 2

Denaby United blemished their unbeaten home record when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Peterborough United in the Midland League at Denaby on Tuesday. The home side found it almost impossible to find an opening in the visitors Iron Curtain line defence.

Both sides played fast open football. Most people in the season’s record crowd of 1,530 must admit that Peterborough were the better side. They played the more thoughtful football. However at the end of the game Peterborough cigar puffing chairman. Mr. Frank Stimson, said, “I think a draw what had been a fairer result. It was a bit of bad luck that the full-back had to make such an unfortunate mistake to let us get the winning goal. But that’s football.”

Peterborough’s winning goal was scored 15 minutes from the end of the game and it was a big tragedy as far as left back Tony Cooper was concerned, attempting to clear a freekick. He sliced the ball across the goalmouth and the visitors inside left, Bob Gibson had little trouble heading the ball past Norman Rimmington.

Peterborough exploited the deep centre forward plan, and their middleman, Andy Donaldson was always a power of strength supplying his ball inside men with some accurate passes. Later Manager, George Swindin (ex New Stubbin, ex-Rotherham, ex-Bradford, ex-Arsenal goalkeeper) explained that Andy was not a spearhead centre forward, and the plan was best suited to his style of play

The visitors first goal came after 23 minutes when inside right Dennis Emery (he was attracted the attention of many league clubs. Including Rotherham United) scored. After receiving a knee-high pass from left half Dennis Farrow, Emory, incidentally is there only one of the Peterborough players without football league experience.

Denaby equaliser came in the 40th minute. Poulson (it was his fifth goal this season) collected a ball a few yards inside the Peterborough half. He wondered towards the left wing before suddenly unleashing a swivelling left foot shot which swept past peak gasping keeper Gerry Loweey .

Denaby’s hopes of victory were well and truly shattered with Peterborough’s deciding goal . Verdict a good open game.
