Saved by Seconds
Late Thrill at Denaby

Denaby United 1 Scarborough 1

Typical end of season football was played at Tickhill Square on Denaby and a matter of seconds saved Denaby from defeat. Denaby, however, and practically all the pressing throughout and everything but score, and it came as a shock when Scarborough broke away the last minute and during a melee the Denaby Denaby goalmouth, Baxter gave his side the lead. From the kick-off Denaby swept down and almost as the whistle went for time McPhail equalised.

It was a near thing; probably the only thrills the handful of spectators had, with exception of the unorthodox keeping of Simpson, the Scarborough goalkeeper. Whether this had any effect on the Denaby forwards one cannot say, but they missed numerous chances.

A little more’s steadiness in front of goal would have brought a crop of goals. The defence had a tight hold on the Scarborough forwards who were sadly disjointed, and if the rest of the team had displayed the initiative of Matt Taylor there would have been a result far more in keeping with the actual difference between the sides
