Bad Shooting and Good Goalkeeping

Denaby United  1  Scunthorpe  1

It was a peculiar game at Tickhill Square on Saturday, when Scunthorpe were the visitors.  The ground was heavy and both sides showed a number of changes. The first half was tame with both teams having an equal number of scoring chances which came to nothing through the weak shooting of the forwards and the keenness and daring of the goalkeepers.

Things began to happen early in the second half.  Denaby made a promising move from the re-start but were driven back, and within two minutes Scunthorpe took the lead through Pattison whose opening, close in, was worked cleverly by Barry.  This was the signal for greater effort on both sides and before Denaby equalised twenty minutes later the crowd had plenty of thrills for their money. Shots scaped the rigging of both goals, several “sitters” were missed and the goalkeepers earned merited applause by bringing off spectacular clearances.  Denaby’s equaliser was rather a tame affair.  Watson had been making little headway on the left wing and Haggar was sent over and Watson brought to the right wing.  Haggar got through in splendid fashion,  put across, and Watson who had been pulled up several times for offside was the only Denaby player near enough to make use of the pass  He kicked with his left and Young, who was anticipating a shot from the right foot, was beaten.

A draw was perhaps the fairest result though, on the whole, Denaby had rather more opportunities than Scunthorpe. It was unfortunate however that injuries early on forced Taylor and Skelton to change over.  Taylor played a sterling game and Barrow and Smith worked hard throughout, though King was not up to his usual standard.  In Armand, Denaby have a good forward, who might well be entrusted with the leadership of the attack.  Brown was no better than his predecessors in that position. Fitzgerald and Haggar were consistent.  Astle, like Young of Scunthorpe, was on top of his form and gave  a delightful display.  Allen, at inside left, was the outstanding Scunthorpe forward and a real thorn in the Denaby side’s defence.  Mills, brought back at centre-half, did well.
