Denaby Pulled Back Too Soon
Denaby United 1, Selby Town 1.
Denaby United grabbed an early lead in Saturday’s Yorkshire League game with Selby Town, and then fell back on defence for the rest of the match.
For over 80 minutes their plan worked to perfection, Selby were seeing more of the ball but rarely looked dangerous.
But, in the 83rd minute, a defensive slip let in Selby to grab the equaliser, and Denaby ‘s schemes were shattered.
The final few minutes saw Selby launch an all out attack on the Denaby goal, when, for the first time in the match, the visitors began to look dangerous. Smith the Denaby ‘keeper had more to do in these last few minutes than at any time during the game, but he was in good form and Selby got no further reward.
It was new signing Fricker, playing in an unfamiliar left wing role, who gave Denaby the lead. Wing half Roddis, an effective mid-field link, won the ball in a entre of the field duel and lofted a teasing centre into the Selby box. Morley rose well to click a neat back header intb the path of Fricker, who lunged forward to nod home from close range.
Lion’s Share
The visitors continued to have the lion’s share of the play, but there was a confidence and composure in the Denaby defence that gave the Selby forwards little chance to shine.
Denaby had given a confident workmanlike display in the first half, and their tactics had taken the sting from the visitors, but at this point the time was ripe for a more aggressive approach
Selby had showed signs of weakening and Denaby should have stepped in for the kill. But instead they, continued to rest on their laurels, content with just the one goal in the bag, and it proved fatal. Shepherd latched onto a loose ball, and slipped through the mesh of the Denaby defence to equalise.
Selby twice came close to grabbing both points but they were kept at bay.
