Grandstand Finish

Denaby United  1  York City Reserves 0

A fighting finish with only 10 fit players, and a splendidly taken goal by Saxton, pulled the game out of the fire for Denaby United against York city reserves on Saturday.

Charlie Lee resumed the second hobbling on the left-wing, and was little more than a passenger for the rest of the game.

After their impressive holiday displays, Denaby were disappointing and they could not have grumbled if York had a three-goal lead at the interval. Their midfield football was a delight and it was as well for Denaby that Vardy and Lockwood were top of their form.

However, Denaby staged a grandstand finish and when the ball came over from the left Saxton’s head rose above a crowd of defenders for a match-winning goal.

Lockwood and Ainley was your pick of a grand Denaby defence, and Thompson and Coop were the pick of the York forwards.
