Denaby United Pile it on in Colossal 15-0 victory.
Denaby United 15, Brodsworth 0.
This fantastic Denaby victory at Tickhill Square in the Yorkshire League on Saturday started the jubilant Denaby fans thumbing the record books. This brought back memories of Denaby’s mammoth 20-0 victory over Sharebrook in the Central Alliance League, about five seasons ago, when Denaby were in this competition after the Midland League had folded-up.
When the jubilation died down and the match was analysed, it was as one supporter put it: ‘They were up against a poor side.’
Brodsworth, firmly planted at the bottom of the League, had only won one match this season. But this apart it was a magnificent performance by Denaby, and one of the most encouraging things supporters can draw from this game is that in spite of their great lead Denaby never gave up as some teams would have done in a similar position.
‘We have had it done to us so often in the past, we have learned the hard way,’ said one Denaby official.
Brodsworth must have known that things were not going their way, when they turned up with an all red strip – a clash with Denaby’s colours.
They turned out in blue to face the tigers of Denaby – aptly decked out in red and white stripes.
After a fumbling 15 minutes, in which Denaby could easily have had four, the goal rush started. Denaby were eight up by half-time, left-half Collins scoring a first-half hat-trick.
A former long serving officials with Denaby United, Mr. Arthur Roberts, said he could not remember when Denaby had led by so many at half-time. Even when Denaby got 20, it was only 3-0 at half-time.
On strove Denaby in the second half, playing excellent, hard, fast football of which they would be proud.
Saw Bright Side.
One felt sorry for Brodsworth’s goalkeeper, Slockwell, who played well, and saved least another six goals.
But he kept his homour.
As Denaby’s centre-forward Caunt. slammed in a goal after an infringement – which if allowed would have been his sixth of the match – Stockwell shouted: ‘ What’s a matter haven’t yet scored enough today.’
And as a way of encouragement to the Brodsworth defence, one Denaby supporter, with the enthusiasm of a spectator at a Roman Arena, shouted, “Never mind lads, we’ve seen a lot more scored at tennis here.”
Inside Right Staite played ntelligently for Denaby and engineered some good moves. The defence did not have much to do so one could not really judge their display
