Midland League
Denaby United 2 Barnsley Reserve 1
The opening match at Denaby on Saturday attracted a crowd of about 500 spectators. Both teams included new players, and Denaby’s formation showed some rearrangement, with several usual half-backs playing forward. Nimrod and Hoey appeared as new additions, while Lawley and Dudhill formed the defensive line in front of Hancock in goal. Mr. Fox, of Darnall, officiated as referee.
Barnsley, having won the toss, took advantage of a strong sun and breeze and were quickly on the offensive. Jones initiated an early attack, but Denaby’s defence held firm. For the first twenty minutes play remained largely in the home half, though Denaby gradually forced Barnsley back. Goodlad and Watts made promising advances, but their efforts were checked by Barnsley’s defence.
Denaby’s pressure increased, and after sustained attacking play the ball was worked forward, allowing Hall and Ryans to combine effectively and secure the opening goal—the first of the season. Barnsley pressed in response, but no further scoring occurred before half-time, Denaby leading by one goal to nil.
After the interval Denaby again attacked early, though several chances were disrupted by offside decisions and strong defending. Barnsley eventually equalised following a well-worked move, Anderson finishing with a fine shot. The game became more evenly contested, with both sides creating opportunities.
Denaby regained the advantage when Goodlad advanced and, after forcing a corner, the ball was well placed and finished decisively, restoring the lead. Barnsley responded with renewed pressure, but their attacks were repeatedly broken up by solid defending from Lawley and Hancock, while Nimrod and Dowson contributed effectively in midfield.
The closing stages saw continued efforts from Barnsley, though their finishing proved inadequate. Denaby maintained their lead, and despite some rough play—resulting in a rebuke from the referee—the home side held firm until the final whistle.
Result:
Denaby United – 2 goals
Barnsley Reserve – 1 goal
