Boston Beaten in Last Eight Minutes
Denaby United 2 Boston 0
For the third consecutive Saturday Boston measured their strength with that of South Yorkshire, and again they failed to get the better of the argument. The last three Saturdays are been disappointing ones for the team who earlier in the season were favourites for the Midland League championship, for a point dropped at home to Mexborough, one to Wath, and two points yielded at Denaby, and set them so far back in the championship contest, that they are now far from being Mexborough’s most dangerous rivals for the top place.
In the first half play was about even, Denaby were slightly more forceful and would have had just reward and they led by a goal at the interval. The second half Denaby dominated for a long spell, but still finished in effectively on the whole.
Everyone had settled down for a drawn game when Denaby made one of those sudden breaks into fast open football. Croot had led the way by one or two quick through passes to his forwards, and the danger came from the right. The ball was turned out onto the line near goal, and Westwood, the Treeton youth on trial, passed it along the ground across the goal. Allen completely missed it, and no defender was near enough to take it. The ball travelled across to Skeels who cut in quickly and shot past Wainwright.
A few minutes later, an offence by Boston half well over on the Denaby left-wing led to the award of a freekick to Denaby. Brown took the kick and made a splendid shot. Wainwright got up to the ball just under the crossbar, but the power of the shot – and possibly a swerve – caused him to drop it and he fell too. The Denaby forwards were turning away, apparently satisfied that the ball was already over the line, but the referee did not blow and Taylor, with great presence of mind, suddenly turned back port on the finishing touch. It was a queer goal.
