Denaby United’s Two Holiday Goals

Denaby United 2 Frickley Colliery 4

Frickley Colliery completed a handsome Midland League double over Denaby United in their Christmas holiday programme. They followed up their 4-0 defeat of United at Westfield Lane on Boxing Day with a 4-2 victory at Denaby on Saturday.

Strong sunlight and a blustery wind gave United a first half advantage, but they failed to make use of it, A couple of snap goals by centre-forward SKELDING and inside-left McMORRAN in little over two minutes threw United completely out of gear and it was not until the second half that any real signs of recovery were evident.

The sole shining light in tine Denaby attack was centre forward Paul SWABY, who added another goal to his already impressive list in the 28th minute.

It is likely that Denaby would have held Frickley but for a lack of support for Swaby early on. A successful penalty shot by left half ORANGE rounded off the first half for the visitors.

The second half saw some good football by both teams, but it was Frickley who went ahead in the 50th minute when right-winger WILKINSON crashed home on the re-bound a ball which had been punched clear by Smethurst. Twenty Minutes later right half

PILKINGTON scored for Denaby. Teams:

Denaby — Smethurst; Williams. Lawley; Marsh, Miller, Pilkington; Bunclark, Hankin, Swaby, Friel, Bainbridge.

Frickley Ryalls; Pell, Loukes; Roberts, Conroy, Orange; Wilkinson, Crompton, Skelding, McMorran, Hood.

Referee               Mr. W. Keyworth (Leeds).
