Sheffield Independent – Monday 25 January 1909
Denaby United 2 Gainsborough Trinity Reserves 4
This game attracted but a poor “gate” to the Denaby enclosure on Saturday.
Gainsborough Trinity opened with a vigorous onslaught and Blower beat Pennington twice.
Denaby and the best of matters for the rest of the half, but the Trinity defence was very sound, and Gainsborough crossed over two up.
Early in the second hall Marsh headed through from a centre by E. Westwood and Denaby continued to attack hotly.
Gainsborough however, broke away twice and scored through Wood and Blower.
Towards the close Denaby were awarded a penalty for “hands” and Kelly reduced the lead.
Result: Gainsborough Trinity Reserves, 4 goals; Denaby United. 2 goals
