Denaby Utd – Denaby 2   Gresley Rovers 2

Mexborough and Swinton Times – Saturday 02 April 1904

Denaby United  2   Gresley Rovers  2

Played at Denaby, after the conclusion of the Montagu Cup Final, another good gate assembling, notwithstanding the great deal of football for the one afternoon.

The Rovers at once developed dashing tactics, and repeatedly bore down on Stables and Co., who were eventually well beaten by Wileman, with a capital judged shot.

Denaby frequently attacked, but were too often sent empty away, and the interval arrived with the Rovers one up.

In the second half, Denaby improved, and gave more than they received. Gray, the Gresley custodian, once saved magnificently from a knot of players close in.

Later Brown almost got through, and Ward had the bad luck to head through his own goal, Denaby equalising somewhat luckily.

Gresley immediately called on Stables, and the ball going to mid-field, the homesters gained a free kick in their opponent’s territory. This was capitally placed, and Chadfield, pouncing on the leather, gave Denaby the lead, amidst cheers.

Nearing the end, Wileman put Gresley on terms, and a hard game resulted:

Denaby … 2 goals
Gresley … 2 goals
