Denaby Made the Most of Fortune’s Offering

Denaby United 2, Hull Brunswick 1

Hull Brunswick were dealt a series of blows which proved happy for Denaby in their Yorkshire League match at Tickhill Square on Saturday, for the visitors were deprived of four regular first-teamers.

An injury and a clashing East Riding game badly depleted Hull’s striking line. The result could be a top spot for the United, which Brunswick think might have been reversed if their application for a postponement had been approved.

Denaby dominated the first half, and an Ainscough shot in 12 minutes put them on the winning trail. A hatful of goals was expected, but Hull’s defence was well organised.

Their bearded left-back, Foster, put Cooper, who can play clever soccer given room, was right off his game. Burly Foster discouraged the right-winger from chasing too hard, which was a big factor in keeping down the score.

Brian Caunt’s big boot put most of what got into the Denaby danger area right back to safety, and then Whittaker, Parker and Wood made good, though not conclusive, use of it.

Denaby went further ahead thirty seconds after the change around through Brian Parker. The centre-forward put Whittaker, on to a perfect chance a minute later but he mis-hit. Hull came back a little into the game, but when Warwick scored with a scintillating solo effort everybody was surprised.

Without needing to try too hard, the home side kept in front to gain two invaluable points.

Denaby United: G. Smith, Wiggles, Caunt, Pettit, C. Parker, Ainscough, Cooper, Whittaker, B. Parker, Wood, McIntyre.

Hull Brunswick: Moore, Feaney, Foster, Par kin, Hackett, Massey, Foots, Lowe, Bell, Warwick, Robinson.
