F.A. Challenge Cup.
Denaby Just Prevail in Derby.
Eight Midland League clubs were engaged in the third qualifying round (divisional finals) of the F.A. Challenge Cup on Saturday, and, except where they met, all were successful.
Denaby United just deserved their 2-1 win over Mexborough on the Tickhill Square ground, but neither side was able to overcome the rough surface of the ground and a slippery ball. Ten minutes from the start Briggs, the Mexborough centre-forward, opened the scoring with a good “header” from a centre by Higginbottom (H.), and it was not until five minutes from the interval that Denaby drew level. Turner scoring from a penalty.
Denaby started off the second half in irresistible fashion, and Green headed through after shot from Clegg had struck the bar. Although the football was not of a high standard, it was a hard and fast game. The outstanding player was Vollans, the Mexborough centre half-back, who got through a tremendous amount of work in defence and continually tried to open up the game. Rodgers, the Denaby right-back, kicked well, and should develop into a class defender. Clegg was the pick of hardworking half-back line.
