Denaby Utd – Denaby 2 Notts Forest Res 2 – Two Up in 2 Minutes

25 April 1938

Sheffield Independent – Monday 25 April 1938,

Denaby Utd. 2, Notts Forest Res 2

To  be two goals up in two minutes was the fortune of Denaby United at Tickhill Square, and from their subsequent play it appeared for a time that they would repeat their Easter Monday performance, but the experienced Forest players refused to be stampeded and gradually it became evident that Denaby would have a real task if they were to secure at least one point.

Notts earned more than a point, but the defence held out in heroic fashion, their determination in the end countering the better staying power displayed by the visitors.

Betts, with admirable opportunism, claimed both the Denaby goals, but Hindley reduced the arrears after 35 minutes, and within four minutes of the restart, Oakton, who had transferred to the right wing owing to injuries, limped up to score the equaliser.

Denaby included eight amateurs. Betts and Williams (L.) did well m the forward line and Fleetwood in the defence.

Gardiner was outstanding for the Forest.
