After the Mansfield Game Denaby fixture was very poor

Denaby United 2 Sheffield Club 1

After the 10 goals Mansfield game Saturdays Sheffield Senior Cup tie at Tickhill Square was very poor stuff in indeed. Sheffield club, last season’s semifinalists, were beaten 2-1 after a second minute “complimentary” goal, but the game was so wholly scrappy, but also constantly back in force, that one at sympathy with the “customer” in the stands who urged ‘em to “drop it in’t middle and let ‘em sort it out.”

Sheffield were a goal up in the second minute.

34 minutes went by before Poulson got the equaliser with an unspectacular shop which seemed to be diverted, finally, by a defender and the winner came from Holmes after 10 minutes in the second half when he went through to a long ball which eluded the advancing Jeff defenders – and scored.

Little of Note

2 near goals were kicked off the respective goal lines at various stages of the game, several shots went over the crossbar and there were occasional shots which Williamson and Paul Freeman had to fist out, but by and large it was a game of little exciting incident and will not go down in the records with much underlining.

Saturday’s game brought 25 is a total of plays from whom United have drawn the senior side matches so far this season. Only Southall and Hague have been “ever presents.” Barnes has missed one of the 21 league and cup fixtures and Poulson of Miss one. Duggan has missed two and Gillott two. And to date, leading goalscorers, league and cup are Poulson (11), Holmes (8) and Duggan (8).

Rose was out of the Denaby side at the last minute through illness, and this necessitated two positional changes and then close of Mervyn Law for his second game this season with the senior side. He was unlucky to miss scoring at least two goals – one from a very neatly taken hook in the first half. Southall, who hasn’t missed a game with the senior side so far, was operating at right back and the promoted Needham was making his first senior side appearance at left half. He gave a good account of himself, too. Morgan also did himself credit at right half.

Second Minute Goal

Holmes was sent through from the kick-off and one felt that had he shot first time he might easily have registered an early point, but elected to give Duggan the chance, and Duggan was not so advantageously placed.

The ball was swept into the Denaby half and as it ran through, Barnes elected to let it run to Williamson rather than to clear it. Alas for United Robinson was in much coarser attendant than, I fear, Barnes realised, and before Williams feel the ball Robinson and Worrell between them were onto it, and Worrell at the easiest job in the world to pack it away safely into the empty goalmouth.
