Denaby and Burton Reserves
The match at Denaby on Saturday, where Burton United Reserves were the visitors, was completely wrecked owing to a furious gale which blew straight across the ground from goal to goal.
Denaby had the benefit of this during the first portion, and without doubt made more of this advantage than did their opponents later on. Denaby were slightly the superior team, and just about deserved their victory.
Biggs, who made his first appearance in the Denaby team, was the best forward on the field, and signalised his debut by scoring a beautiful goal. Tayles, in the home goal, was extremely safe, and saved some fine shots. Gilchrist and Sheffield were the best men on the Burton side.
Denaby United v Burton United Reserve
At Denaby, in squally weather. Although facing a strong wind, Burton first attacked, Tayles having to kick away hurriedly. Denaby then monopolised the play, Biggs scoring a beautiful goal. Accurate play in the gale of wind was impossible, and all the game was in the Burton half. Roper added a second point for Denaby, and Ryans a third. Denaby were awarded numerous corners.
Half-time: Denaby United, 3 goals; Burton United Reserve, 0 goal.
The second half opened with severe pressure by Burton, Denaby being unable to make any headway against the gale. Tayles, in goal, was repeatedly called upon, but he saved finely. Occasionally Denaby broke away, and once Ryans was presented with an open goal, but he shot over the bar. Gilchrist scored for Burton after half an hour, and just before time Burton scored again.
Result: Denaby United, 3 goals; Burton United Reserve, 2 goals.
