Taylor’s Goal
Castleford well beaten at Denaby

Denaby United 3 Castleford Town 1

The outstanding incident in a good game at Denaby was a goal which Stanley Taylor scored just before the interval and which set Denaby on the way to a smart win.

The game to then had been evenly contested at a fast pace, with only slight advantage to Denaby, but their pattern weaving had not brought goals.

Then Taylor evidently decided to take the business in his own hands. Receiving the ball in midfield he ran straight through unceremoniously hustling Howson out of his way, sidestepping Frost, and finishing a great run by scoring as fine a goal as has ever been scored on the ground.

After the interval Denaby asserted themselves. At the interval perhaps Castleford were unfortunate to be a goal behind, for they had played spirited football, doing brilliant work at times. But after the interval Denaby were clearly the masters, though for a time only the failure of Castleford’s inside forwards, due largely to the slippery ground, prevented their getting even.

Then Skeels seized a chance during a struggle in front of Frost, the ball going into the net off Howson. Later, during another strong Castleford raid, Croot unluckily put the ball past Bromage.

But Allen made up for earlier blunders by scoring Denaby’s third.

It is due both to Denaby and to Castleford to say that Castleford played good football and proved themselves a smart side. Yet Denaby won on merit.
