Denaby Dispose of Newcomers …

And Are Now Div. 1 ‘Toppers’

Denaby United 3, Frecheville 1

Denaby United moved relentlessly to the top of the Yorkshire League at Tickhill Square on Saturday by disposing of highly-rated newcomers Frecheville to maintain a one hundred per cent, home record.

Frecheville, cock-a-hoop after the 7-1 thrashing of Hatfield the previous week, were brought down to earth by a stronger and more determined outfit.

But they looked a far better team than when they visited the Square for a pre-season friendly, losing 2-0 on that occasion.

But Denaby have progressed too, and the team spirit that has built up through the present campaign drove them on to victory before Frecheville could get to grips with the muddy ground conditions.

And it didn’t help the visitors’ task when they presented Denaby with the first goal early in the opening period

Harold Sapey hit a speculative shot from the left of the box, and as the opposition stood and watched, the ball bobbed gently into the corner of the net.

Denaby never stopped running in this half, and the visitors were demoralised as speedy raids down the wing stretched the defence time and time again.

Bearded ‘keeper Morrit pulled off a great save from Sumpner, who worked like a Trojan, while Frecheville showed class but no organisation up front.

Sapey added a second before the break, running onto a through ball and smoothly pushing his shot past the advancing Morritt, while the Sheffielders had not produced a shot worthy of mention.

The forward line, which has scored more goals than other first division clubs, produced a fair amount of skill but lacked in urgency and determination. Her

When Sumpner turned sharply and cracked in a third from .outside the area, it was all over.

Denaby’s game slowed, inevitably, and Frecheville notched a consolation goal past Whitehead. But there was never any threat of a comeback. And England almost made it four when his shot hit the post.

It was yet another efficient display by Denaby, and one which will give them every confidence.
