This Was the Old Workmanlike United

Denaby United 3 . Grantham 0.

Denaby United certainly re-established themselves with their supporters on Monday.

This victory over Grantham was a workmanlike job by the old United we came to know last season. The team ran like a smoothly-oiled machine and only a matter of Inches robbed them of at least four more goals in a first half in which they had the Grantham goal constantly under siege.       .

For these errors the strong field breeze was partly responsible.

A Boardman shot, a Saxton flying header, a McGuinness drive and a Woods “special” all crashed against the cross bar with the excellent Hinton beaten They were discouraging to United, who were serving up some thoughtful and calculated teamwork,  but reward came after 30 minutes when ED-WARDS chased a free kick which had eluded the watchful Grantham defence, and bundled the ball into the net.

Grantham had defended so well in this first-half that it seemed United’s lead would be too slender against such a stiff adversary as this bustling breeze, but contrary to all after more frequent sorties by the Grantham forwards early in the second half, it was all United again, and BOARDMAN (after 73 minutes) and EDWARDS (after 80 minutes) put them well beyond Grantham’s reach.
