Monday’s Contrast
Denaby United 3 Grantham 1
There was much contrast on Monday when early in the game Hunt had to kick the ball off the Grantham goal-line to save disaster and Morley was knocked over with a saving header from the return shot. Wheatley crashed the ball over the crossbar, then a header from Woods hit the bar. The first Denaby goal came in the 28th minute.
Williams initiated the move with a nicely controlled pass to Cooling, who side-footed the ball on to Rowney. He sent Woods through, the ball went out to WHEATLEY and the outside forward hit the ball low into the corner of the net. McCARTNEY it was who found an otherwise sound Denabv defence surprisingly open in the 43rd minute and an almost identical shot levelled the issue, but in the 52nd minute United were ahead.
Cooling made the goal. Wheatley shared in it, and WOODS ran into position beautifully to score it with his head. LAW got one of his typical “terrier” goals in the 78th minute to make the issue clear-cut.
The shades of night fell so quickly that the white ball was brought into play for the last 10 minutes.
Next Monday’s kick-off (with Nottingham Forest reserves) is timed for 5.30. United are at Millmoor on Saturday
