Denaby United 3 Hull City Reserves 2

it was a bright game at Tickill Square on Monday in spite of chopping, changing and bustle – and certainly very satisfactory.

90 minutes of vigour were punctuated by five goals of a calibre you don’t get every day. Hall wouldn’t want to of them every day, anyhow – but that’s a detail. The fact was that they warmed up the crowd – and the 22, to fever heat, as a result – a fast moving game, enjoyable to watch. And after Saturday victory was very sweet.

The scoring chart was very interesting. Two goals came the first two minutes. Within a minute and ½ Ellis put Brown

(At centre forward) through to score for Denaby. Of a minute later the breeze flopped in the sales. Hull slipped through and Acquroff equalised. Then it was touch and go. Exactly 19 minutes later Spivey (who was one of the liveliest Hull forward – and probably the smartest of the 10) worked his way through the Denaby defence to take a crack at Tremain and force a corner. Bell headed in very neatly and precisely from the resultant corner kick as though that was the right and proper thing to do. And there was no more fuss about it than that. Denaby 1 Hull 2. And thus to the interval.

The Match Winner

in the 55th minute of the game Denaby were awarded a free kick. Shepherd, right half, quickly did his stuff by scoring from the spot. And as if to emphasise matters a second freekick was awarded an Shepherd scored again. That goal won the match for although there were numerous moments of anxiety, Tremain – and his bodyguard – kept the charge intact.

Denaby’s victory was all the more meritorious in view of the changes in the side through injury. Fleetwood was one notable absentee, Hardy another, Parry was in the forward line. Once again a bright feature of the game was the brilliance of the halfback line. As a defensive factor, the Hull halves excelled, where construction came in they were lacking.

One must hand it to Denaby, with a considerable weakened team they achieved a smart success.
