Denaby United Beat Methley Under Difficulties.

Denaby United beat Methley Perseverance three goals to two in the second qualifying round of the F.A. Challenge Cup at Cudworth, yesterday.

This was the third meeting of the clubs. Denaby won the toss and elected to play down the slope, facing a stiff breeze and powerful sun. The peculiarities of the ground seemed to upset the calculations of both teams, and play was very tame for some time. After half-an-hour, from a well-placed corner by Turner, Denaby took the lead, Ogley, the centre half-back, finding the net.

Just before the interval Ogley (picture) sustained a fractured forearm, the result of nasty fall, and retired. The second half began with a thrill, Kelly adding to Denaby’s account in the first minute. Satisfied with this lead, Denaby concentrated on defence, and Methley had more of the game. Birch left his charge and Windle fisted out a shot that was making for goal. From the penalty, Mason reduced the lead. Straight from the kick-off Kelly added a third goal for Denaby,

In the last 20 minutes Methley were seen to advantage. Butler scored a good goal, and with a little more steadiness they would have drawn level.

Considering their handicap, however, the Midland League team deserved their victory.
