The game would have been far more interesting if Collier, Newark’s right-winger, had not been a passenger after the first half hour’s play. In the early stages he was easily the most dangerous of the Newark forwards and with Smith, his partner, promised fireworks very early. Bromage was up and doing in a livelier manner than we have seen him for some weeks. After about 30 minutes, however, Collier was limping though it was not noticed that he had been involved in any accident.

Skeels and Green were the first of the Denaby line to get on the war path and as a result of some forceful work after a few minutes there was a regular scramble in the Newark goal. Nobody knows how a score was missed. There was a corner kick, then Newark got away through Collier. Skeels was soon busy again and centred to J. C. Johnson who headed in from close range, but Staples luckily fisted out. He was a pretty quick lad at fisting, was Staples, and it would have gone hard with any player who stopped some of the jabs he landed on the ball. Fortunately his aim was true.

The first goal came after 22 minutes in a rather unexpected manner. The Denaby forwards were mixed up with the Newark backs and halfbacks in the Newark goal, enjoying themselves pretty well, when the ball was kicked out of the struggle up the field: Ogley took a hefty kick and the ball found a gangway and sweetly entered the net. Oakley had another go soon afterwards but the ball swerved just out. But he was commissioned to take a penalty kick eight minutes before the interval and converted the kick.

Newark gave a good account of themselves in the second half and it wasn’t until the final minutes that B. Johnson finished off an effort by J.C. Johnson for Denaby’s third
