Denaby United 4 Grantham Town 1
Up to 3 minutes from half-time at Tickhill Square, Denaby were a goal down to Grantham, but two surprise goals inside a minute set them well on the way to victory.
Grantham, perhaps, made the initial mistake of electing to play with the sun against a stiff breeze for the first half, for they failed to ram home their advantage in the second half, and by that time Denaby had assumed the psychological supremacy.
Two further goals, again within a minute, set the seal on their success.
Searby gave Grantham a surprise lead after 10 minutes following an attack which swept the Denaby defence on one side, but subsequently Denaby pressed strongly and Ashton, in the Grantham goal, playing brilliantly, was everywhere. Denaby’s finishing was much improved with plenty of Killourhy scheme at centre forward, but Ashton appeared to have the master hand until the 42nd minute when Schofield equalised with a surprise, high shop, a lovely goal.
In the next minute Lawrence put through his own goal and the scoring was completed in the 76 and 77th minute by Law and Killourhy.
