Denaby Recover With Goal Blitz

Denaby United 4, Ossett town 2.

What a frustrating game is football. For 45 minutes at Tickhill Square on Saturday, Denaby United fans groaned and grimaced as their side flapped and floundered.

There were so many gaps in the home side, it was like trying to plug a draught with a net curtain.

But in the second half all this was almost – but not quite – forgotten. Ossett town, leaders at the turn around saw their hopes dashed and they were down 2-1 in 11 minutes after the restart, down 4-1 quarter of an hour later, and despite a 75th minute Ellis goal, finish without even a point, 4-2 losers. It was a bitter harvest after they have produced most of the good football in the first half.

Miraculous

Denaby’s recovery was miraculous after such a hopeless start, for they had been very unsettled by Ossetts harassing, and had left the kind of defensive gaps which gave Bloomer clear shot for goal from 30 yards when the match was 15 minutes old. Then after two minutes of the second half Launders latched onto a long ball from Barton to equalise. This was just the tonic Denaby needed and after 56 minutes Alan Cooper gave United the lead. After 70 minutes, up popped inside left Mark Smith. Looking like Capt Kidd., with sticking plasters over right eye, he pirated two goals within a minute – first volley from a right-wing cross, the second, a quick flick to stab home a rebound off the offset posts.

In a tangle

Caunt and keeper Smith got in a tangle to give Eliss Ossets second goal after 75 minutes’ but by the time, Denaby were home and dry. They may not however expect to be given a second chance at Gainsborough in their FA Cup tie next week.
