Launders Hand in Three Denaby goals

Denaby United 4 Retford Town 1

hats off to Ken Launders and to two more valuable points added to Denaby United Yorkshire League promotion tally at Tickhill Square on Saturday.

Against a tough and lucky Retford Town side, Denaby might have come off worse if it had not been for their hard-working inside right, who scored two of United four goals and engineered another.

Thanks to Launders, Denaby were on level terms 1-1 at half-time, and the two goals he scored early in the second half just the tonic the home side needed to banish the blues after their first defeat of the season previous week.

The game was only two minutes old when Launders latched onto a through ball, powered his way to a sandwich tackle and slipped the ball to outside right Cooper, who scored with a low drive into the bottom corner of the net.

But with 15 minutes gone Timson headed the equaliser over Gordon Smith, who was looking unhappy in the Denaby goal, troubled it seemed by a wrist injury.

Surprise Goal

Retford, a tougher proposition than their league position tells, had things under control again and it remained that way until five minutes into the second half when Launders headed Denaby back into the lead. He was at it again five minutes later to make it 3-1 with a cracking shot from 20 yards that took everyone by surprise – and not least Cooke.

Denaby took the bit by the teeth for the rest of the game and they could have had a hatful of goals before Barton hit the fourth in off the post from a Collins pass.

United finished the game with only 10 men after Roy Ainscough was given marching orders by referee Mariott from Eckington who apparently took exception to remark by the left half.

Teams:

Denaby: Gordon Smith 7, Wiggles 8, Caunt 7, Collins 7, Cooper (B) 7, Ainscough 6, Cooper (A), Launders 9, Barton 7, Smith (M)7 , Smith (G) 7
