Denaby Back to Form.
Entertaining Game with Scarboro’.

Denaby United 4, Scarboro’ 3

Denaby gained one of the best wins of the season at Tickhill Square on Monday. Scarboro’ led 2-1 at the interval but a sound defence backing well combined forward work enabled Denaby to pull the game round in the second half. Denaby began shakily and while they were disorganised Scarboro’ scored. Ridge made a high shot with a free kick. Speight caught the ball but fell and LIDGETT pushed him and the ball over the line.

Scarboro’ hardly deserved the lead. After that Denaby’s defence got steadier and the forwards were kept moving better. As a result after 18 minutes JENKINS scored.

Denaby had the better of the play for some time but the inside forwards did not finish effectively the good work of Turner and Jenkins, the wingers.

Scarboro’ regained the lead after 42 minutes. LIDGETT converted a corner kick well placed by Wainwright. Denaby had a good chance to equalise before halftime but Collins kicked the ball off the goal line.

Denaby played more methodically in the second half. Ogley made himself a sixth forward. Windle and Burton watched the Scarboro’ wingers and Finney and Shenton held the rest of the Scarboro’ forward line. The scheme worked well. The Denaby forwards were rarely driven out of Scarboro’s half and were generally in shooting range. Inside 15 minutes Denaby, took the lead for the first time. The equaliser was scored in five minutes. Turner crossed the ball and Kaye’s header was partially cleared, but HANCOCK rushed the ball into the net. TURNER, was the getter of the third goal. He shot hard and the ball cannoned into the net off Wallace.

Scarboro’ fought back after that and equalised, in 29 minutes. JONES took advantage of a misunderstanding by Shenton and Finney, and finished a solo run by scoring.

In the last 15 minutes good football was played by Denaby. The forwards dribbled and combined cleverly and made a continuous bombardment of the Scarboro’ goal. The only mistake they made was to neglect JENKINS. When at last he got his chance, eight minutes before the end, he headed the winning goal.

It way a splendid game. Two good teams played pretty football and Denaby won by superior craft. Shenton, Finney, Windle and Ogley were outstanding in defence, and among the forwards Turner and Hancock were good. Scarborough had a good defence but with the exception of Jukes the forwards were not particularly effective.
