Denaby’s Best Home Show of The Season

Denaby United 4  York City Reserves 0

A hat-trick by Brian Parker, the best three goals seen at Tickhill Square this season, crowned a wonderful Yorkshire League performance by Denaby United, beating the youngsters of York City Reserves 4-0.

For my money it was Denaby’s best home performance of the season. The whole team knitted together into such a powerful force that it would be difficult to see any team beating them. This invaluable team work was the deciding factor for 75 per cent of the time and sheer stamina for the remainder. Man for man, York City Reserves were more skilful but the changes upset their team balance.

This did not allow the home defence to become apathetic and they found Campbell a livewire in attack. Gordon Smith produced three magnificent saves.

All in all, however it was the tussle between the effervescence of the Denaby forward line and the stable York City defence in which Fallon, for his suicidal dives at the feet of Denaby’s sharpshooters. and Popely were outstanding. Popley largely contained the fleet-footed Cooper, a hard task by any means.

Darfield Newcomer

It was interesting to see Roger Stansfield in the York City team. This 18 years old player from Darfield have a second outing with York at right half and he gave a good account of himself. He was a promising player with Wombwell high school some years ago.

But the man of the match for everyone’s money was Denaby’s right are Peter Pettit, making his debut in the league and capturing the arts of all supported with a magnificent display of football. It was difficult to see if you put a foot wrong throughout the match.

Parker’s goals came in the 14th 46 and 54th minute, all cracking shots ranging from 15 to 25 yards. Trevor Whittaker added Denaby’s fourth three minutes from time following attacking work by full-back Wiggles.
