Last Home Fixture- Denaby Win in a Canter

Denaby United 4  York City Reserves 0

Denaby United won their last home match of the Midland League season with a good deal more ease than would have appeared likely in a monotonously dull first half.

Tempo was set by CLARK when he scored with a couple of minutes to go to half-time, giving United an interval lead, and thereafter goals came from PLATT, via Law, in the 67th minute, from CLARK again in the 80th minute, via the post, and from LAW, one of the second half’s best forwards, in the 87th minute.

The second half compensated, in part, for a first half devoid of incident or interest, and was remarkable for at least three “goals which might have been” from Rowney. A frisky breeze didn’t help, however, and the ball seemed very light and difficult to control. United had their moments of luck in the closing stages, and York, too, had to thank Simpson for heading out twice on the goal-line. On one occasion, when he covered a centre with Ashley out of position, United were of opinion he had handled and confidently appealed. But referee Godbehere was well up with play and equally confidently waved the game on.

United have now taken eleven points from their last seven Midland League matches — four victories, three draws, and a 16 to 5 goal tally. As one United supporter remarked after Saturday’s match, “There’s summat wrong wi’ our team in’t winter. They wait till t’ summer comes afore they get on t’reight path!”

After that shaky patch earlier this year, it is a very satisfactory windup, nonetheless.

Alf Lee captained the side in this last home fixture, to mark his 104 consecutive appearances
