Decisive Success

Denaby United 5 Harrogate Railway 1.

When they win they really win. A dismal 1-0 defeat at Kiveton the week before apparently meant little to the Denaby United, who, within an unchanged side, swept to a confident 5-1 Yorkshire league victory over Harrogate Railway at Tickhill square on Saturday.

It was level pegging, 1-1, at half-time but the second half saw Denaby right on top in these rockhard conditions.

Harrogate made a strong start, but it was clear that their attack revolved around one-man – centre forward Flatman. With a dazzling burst of speed he twice outstripped United’s defence, the first time to shoot wide but the second time, after 55 minutes he put the ball past Collingwood. From then on, Dalton and Co. kept a tight rein on the talented Harrogate striker.

Five minutes from half-time, a left foot volley by Caunt, as Harrogate’s defence failed to clear, put Denaby level.

Two second-half goals within a minute from inside right Mike Smith really turned the scales after eight minutes of the second half. After 60 minutes Kingston made it 4-1 after threading his way delicately through the railway defence. The inside left then went on to push home the fifth after Caunt had hit the bar five minutes from time.
