Slater’s Four Opportunist Goals for United

Denaby United “fans” are a rather puzzled bunch these days. After 50 years in the Midland League they have entered a new football era—and they never know what to expect.

For it would take more than an expert to assess the quality of Central Alliance football. United’s runaway win on Saturday was just another example of sharply contrasting standards.

Supremely confident, they ambled to a 5-1 victory over Kimberley Town. It is significant to note that most of United’s stinging defeats this season have come from their ex-Midland League rivals.

Highest Individual Score

Saturday was the day of days for Denaby’s Brian Slater, who, after deputising on the right-wing for Sapey, cracked in four opportunist goals—the highest individual match score this season.

Yet two of Brian’s goals would not have been scored against a more experienced side.

Three times—in the 25th, 26th and 65th minutes—Town keeper Johnson could only manage to block the ball, and each time Brian was there to hammer in the rebound.

Town were two down when, in the 37th minute, fiery inside-man E. Langham reduced the arrears after being served with a perfect flying header from Evans.

Five minutes after the re-start Spencer made a solo run to score his first goal for Denaby. A rebound gave Slater his “hat-trick” five minutes later.

Slater’s fourth goal—in the 70th minute—was the best of the match. He intercepted the ball 15 yards out, spun, and hammered into the top of the net from an awkward angle.
