Denaby United 5. Maltby 2
This was another easy verdict for United. Maltby supporters saw their lively forwards in action, but there was a surprise in the sixth minute when Barnicle forced a corner on the Denaby wing and Madin, meeting his flag kick, yards out, scored with a flying header which had Bridgeman beaten all- the way. Evans opened up the game well and kept the Maltby forwards on the move. They constantly swept the ball to the wings. and in the 13th minute, Cooper, on the’ left, centred accurately for Marshall to run in and score. Three minutes later, while the Denaby defence was appealing for offside, Marshall had collected a through pass and scored again.
Three goals inside 16 minutes!
There was no further scoring before half-time and Maltby crossed over with a goal lead, but within five minutes of the resumption Denaby were ahead. Barnicle made a splendid run and put over a high centre which Swift collected and hit smartly into the net, and in the next Denaby advance the ball went to Killourhy who cleverly hooked it past Bridgeman. In the 11th minute of this half Dunn had the bad luck to divert the ball into his own goal and in the 35th minute of the half Barnicle got the fifth goal from a good solo run.
The game was by no means impressive, but Maltby revealed a liveliness in attack which was pleasing to watch. Fisher played a good game in the Denaby half-back line and Barnicle was lively on the wing. There was a comparatively thin “gate” after recent Midland League attendances.
To-morrow Denaby do battle in the F.A. Cup at Scunthorpe.
They beat Scunthorpe decisively 4-2 at the Tickhill Square, and the return Midland League game is among the matches so far to be re-arranged through cup commitments.
