Denaby’s Nap In Cup-tie
Denaby United 5, Swallownest M.W. 0
Denaby United showed greatly improved form on Saturday to stride confidently to a 5-0 home victory over an out-of-touch Swallownest M.W. Side in the Yorkshire League Cup (first round).
Although Swallownest looked to have good potential, on the day they never found their feet. Nor were they allowed to, for it was Denaby’s strength rather than Swallownest’s weakness that won this match.
Things didn’t look too promising for United at first. They dominated in attack, but too often the ball from the wing was low enough to be cut off by defenders. Then Smith, given the ball by left-half Roberts, found the head of centre-forward CAUNT and Denaby were one up after 11 minutes.
Denaby’s second goal after half an hour was a 100-1 chance as Collins rocketed a centre to, WILLIAMS catching Farrish unawares. The Swallownest goalkeeper, who pulled off several fine saves, was beaten again by SMITH from a Cox free-kick just before half-time.
After the re-start Toyne gave SMITH his second to make it 4-0 and in the 85th minute a Caunt corner found WILLIAMS to put the seal of Swallownest’s fate.
Apart from some needless dramatics near the end, the game was cleanly fought, with Denaby maintaining their grip through efficiency in defence – left – back Derek Cox was again outstanding – and speed and accuracy in attack. Inside-left Parker was Swallownest’s best forward.
