United Keep Their Shooting Boots on Against Amateurs.
Denaby United 6, Heeley Amateurs 1
Eleven goals for, only one against in two matches tell the story of Denaby United’s new-found form that took them to a 6-1 home Yorkshire League victory over Heeley Amateurs on Saturday .
In a sparkling second half, triggered off by an own-goal from Heeley ‘keeper Bilton, Denaby cracked in another four first-rate goals to pull the game out of the fire after a dismal opening half that left the score at 1-1 at half-time.
That second half transformation was remarkable, for at the start the Denaby forwards tied themselves in knots getting nowhere fast, while Heeley looked booked for a win with fast, incisive football. United had missed several chances before JOLLEY put them ahead after 14 minutes, only to see GUY equalise two minutes later after an unfortunate mistake by Dodds.
Bilton’s’ mistake, fisting into the net a slippery Whant centre just after the re-start, rattled Heeley; but rattled them no more than the single consistent man in the United forward line-centre-forward Peter Caunt. The barrage of stinging shots that he let loose – one of them lifting Bilton clean off his feet – kept Heeley on tender-hooks.
And with the visitors niggled into mistakes, Toyne and Smith cut neatly through their defence to give WHANT a 55th minute goal. Fifteen minutes later TOYNE made it 4-1 from 25 yards and after an indifferent game, inside-right SMITH came into the limelight with shots that had Bilton well beaten in the 80th and 85th minutes.
This clear-cut win shows one all-important and obvious fact – it’s goals that count. Heeley often looked the more competent side midfield, but could not turn their advantage into goals. Despite some great, yawning midfield gaps, Denaby did score. Pretty or not, a side that shoots often will score- and a side that scores wins games.
