More Goals for Denaby

Denaby 6 Luddendenfoot 0

Denaby played their first home match on Saturday against Luddendenfoot, a Ali faction district club, what sacrifice ground rice to pay the visit, and Denaby were on top from the beginning.

The home side took things very easily, and instead of shooting at first tried to walk the ball into the net. The sooner this idea was dispelled, however, play live in though, and Denaby began their win of 6-0.

The Luddendenfoot defence played well, with Ackroyd in goal a real tower of strength. Time and again he saved his side will stop the home side were wearing their new “uniform” – white shirts and black shorts – for the first time. They played in the old colours against Frickley last week, since the latter team wear black and white

Early on Fleetwood and Barks spoilt attacks by hesitancy, but later Sykes who was perhaps Denaby’s best player, set the line moving, and Scattergood forced Ackroyd to drop the ball, but the goalkeeper recovered and cleared the danger.

After 10 minutes Sykes engineered a movement which resulted in Fearnley passing to Fleetwood, who opened Denaby score with a cross shot. Ackroyd managed a couple of smart saves from Fearnley and Guest, then after 30 minutes Denaby scored a second goal when Fearnley centred for Scattergood to head through. Fleetwood placed inches wide of the post and shortly afterwards Fearnley struck the bar. Fleetwood got in a rousing third goal 10 minutes before the interval, going from Sykes forward pass. Just after half-time Scattergood added his second and Denaby’s fourth.

On the resumption Denaby were again very much on top, but their efforts lacked finish. Sure of victory, they did not seem concerned about scoring further. Play incidentally was rather dull until Fleetwood and Fearnley made Denaby’s total six.
