Scarboro’ Skittled.

Denaby United  6  Scarborough  1

Denaby made a triumphant debut before their own crowd on Monday evening by beating Scarborough’ 6-1.

The match did not attract a large attendance but those who saw the Denaby team were wildly enthusiastic over the form displayed and the promise of the players. It was difficult to realise how this team lost to Frickley two days earlier. There was not a weak unit; each player did well individually but also formed part of a team which combined cleverly. It might be that the goal in the first four minutes had an inspiring effect. At any rate we saw Denaby give a display after it that gladdened the hearts of committee and supporters.

The team faced a brilliant sun in the first hall but it had little effect on their play. They swept up the field rapidly and it was Turner alone who kept them out. His display throughout was outstanding but he was fortunate on many occasions. Denaby added to their score after 17 minutes, but it was in the second half that Denaby showed what they were really capable of. Almost from the start they rushed the ball towards the Scarboro’ goal for Gilchrist to shoot through a crowd of players into the net. For a time they laid siege to the Scarboro’ goal. When play was transferred the defence proved sound and Brannon was scarcely troubled. The tackling was keen and direct; the defender, never allowed the Scarboro’ forwards the slightest scope. Then came three goals inside ten minutes. They were the results of combined attacks, the ball travelling from the right wing and along the whole forward line. Scarboro’s recompense was a single goal scored before the end. The result does not actually show the difference between the teams. Scarboro’, in the first half attempted polished football against Denaby’s direct methods.

In the second half, when Scarboro’ tried to change their tactics, they went to pieces. Their defence was the source of the whole trouble; they could not hold the Denaby forwards. Turner did great things but he saw several shots hit the woodwork when he was hopelessly beaten.

Denaby were strong from start to finish. If they can maintain this form they will go far. North is a distinct acquisition. He has a sure and strong kick. The halves were sound in defence and attack, and the forwards fast and tricky.

The teams were:—

Denaby: Brannon; Taylor, North; Hughes, Norman, Mounteney; Bennett, Gilchrist, Unwin, Owen, Skeels.

Scarboro’: Turner; Culliford, Williams; Bell, Tracey, Gardner; McCormick, King, Wal!banks, Hill, Hodgson.

Referee: D. Taylor, Chesterfield.

Scorers: Unwin (2), Gilchrist (2), Skeels (2), for Denaby; McCormick for Scarboro’. Before the match, Mr. J. Asher, on behalf of the Supporters’ Club, presented to Matt. Taylor a new hall. The Club have also provided the placers with new knickers and stockings.
