Denaby 6 Sheffield Club 0

Denaby’s convincing victory at Tickhill square on Saturday was further evidence of the splendid football they are playing this season. It was an exhilarating game, particularly the first half, and although from the kick-off Denaby were superior in both science and stamina to their opponents, their attack was always full of life, and to the end they proved keen hunters after goals.

The wiles of Denaby’s inside forwards had the Sheffield Club guessing from the start, and as a result they paid little attention to Fearnley and Guest on the wing. It was a big mistake, for Denaby’s first goal (one of the best seen that Tickhill Square) came from Guest. It was a great oblique shot, and curled under the bar with a speed that had Waldenbury hopelessly at sea. This was after 23 minutes stirring play.

The game, which opened in a steady drizzle, was interesting from the start, although it was evident, even after the first 15 minutes, that Sheffield would not stand the pace stop their defence must be commended – for throughout the half Denaby were constantly on the attack and kept them hard at work. Only over eagerness robbed Denaby of an early goal, but later in the first half good work on the part of the Sheffield backs get them out. On only two occasions during this half did the Sheffield forwards get moving.

Fleetwood scored Denaby’s second goal six minutes after their first again through good work by Guest, and only a few minutes later added a third from a pass from Sykes. The fourth goal came from Blackburn two minutes before half-time. Blackburn, a newcomer, is leading the forward line very well.

The second half was a repetition of the first, except that Sheffield fought back more strongly and very gamely in the early stages. Hewitt, playing his first game for Denaby this season, short speed and accuracy and, incidentally, scored Denaby’s fifth goal. Blackburn scored the sixth.

Sheffield must be commended for their game display. Their heavy defeat can be attributed only to the difference in class between the teams. Some such result was fully expected, and but for the good work of Beington and Hartley, Sheffield might have been more heavily defeated.

In the second half we got occasional glimpses of good constructive play for their forwards, but Denaby rarely allow them to get very far. Denaby were sound in every department, Hewitt and Guest being particularly active. A good word is due, too, to Sheffield goalkeeper, Waldenbury
