Denaby Score 8 but Await Points Decision
Denaby Utd 8 Shirebrook 1
The weather saved Shirebrook from a real drubbing at the hands of Denaby United in their Central Alliance game on Saturday.
When torrential rain forced Referee K. Bullock (Sutton) to abandon the game after 65 minutes, Denaby were leading 8-1, their five star attack was punching holes in the shakey Shirebrook defence, and more goals seemed inevitable. Re-organised Shirebrook actually took the lead after five minutes when Johnson, Denaby’s centre half, handled in the penalty area and DOYLE converted the penalty. Denaby, who were at full ‘strength apart front outside left Allott, for whom lee deputised, were soon hoping through the shirebrook backs with comparative ease.
Scoring Spree
A cross by Lees found SAPEY, who put the visitors all square, Then DODDS scored from a goal-mouth melee and added another from a right wing pass. Johnson, Bourne and Oliver made a strong Denaby middle line and they spurred the attack on to score further goals through LEES and SWABY (2) before the interval.
LEES got another in the second half and then there came a three minute break caused by the thunderstorm. Upon the re-start BOURNE scored off a post when a defender’s clearance had stopped in a pool of water. The game was abandoned shortly afterwards.
It is not yet certain whether the result of the game will stand. The rules of the competition state that in the event of a game being abandoned, the committee may order it to be replayed. A decision will presumably, be taken at the next meeting of the committee.
