Five Goals After Lifeless Display

Denaby United 3   Hallam  2

A dull, lifeless display which developed into a breath-taking five-goal orgy is the synopsis of Denaby United’s meeting with Yorkshire League club, Hallam in the first round proper of the Sheffield Senior Cup at Denaby on Saturday.

The first half was far from being representative of the final result-3-2 in Denaby’s favour—and it was not until the second half that either side settled down – to making any real attempt. One or two early Hallam attacks rocked but could not penetrate the Denaby defence.

The best first fourth short came from the Yorkshire Leaguers inside left Williams. He dropped a well-placed shot a few yards outside the goalmouth and Ted Smethurst only just managed to tip it over the cross-bar on the rebound

Early in the second half there was little improvement and the ball continued to be swung ineffectively from end to end until the 65th minute when a snap goal by Hallam centre forward STAINROD put them into the lead. Three minutes later, Denaby inside right HANKIN (picture) equalised and after 77 minutes centre forward Paul SWABY, United’s leading scorer saw their second into the back of the net.

After 85 minutes ‘Hallam were awarded a free kick. Right half Smith rattled the cross-bar but STAINROD was behind him to collect and hammer home the rebound.

The Yorkshire League club continued to press hard but an 87th minute goal by SWABY saw Denaby throughto the second round.
